About me: My name is Charles Hamiltion Houston. What I'm probably most remembered for is the work that I have done in the hopes to end segregation, but it's still best to start with the past; I was born on September 3 in 1895 in Washington D.C. I graduated from Amherst College as one of the six valedictorians at the age of nineteen. I then taught English at Howard University for 2 years. After teaching, I enlisted as a second lieutenant in WW1 in the segregated US Army field artillery unit. After the war, I went to Harvard Law School and became the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review. After I graduated from Harvard University, I practiced law with my father until 1950 and I started teaching at Howard University again. At Howard I was the vice-dean from 1929-1935. During that time I fought for Howard's Law school to get nationally accredited. Proudly, I am known as "the man who killed Jim Crow." And I devoted all my time to doing just that! I wanted equality at any cost.
Who I'd like to meet: I would have loved to meet President Barack Obama, because he is the embodiment of everything I worked so hard to fight for.
Mr Houston, I cannot thank you enough for fighting for my rights. I'm very glad that you didn't give u on my case and now I've graduated from the University of Missouri Law School, thanks to you.
Hey. I miss you. But we did it! I wish you could have been there when they read the ruling for Brown v. Board of Education. We couldn't have done it without you. As I've always said, it was all thanks to you, “We were just carrying [your] bags, that’s all,” You will be forever missed.
